I've enjoyed my kindle edition of the NY Times enormously in the 2 hours that I've had it so far. :) I sat with this article learning all the tricks, so it is very easy to do. I have lots of eye problems and was very nervous based on other reviews saying how terrible the readability of the kindle is. The readability is at least (if not better) than that of the paper. I actually reduced the default font size to be able to see more at one time and it's still very readable.

BTW, if you've ever used any small screen devices like a Play Station Portable, etc. you know to ALWAYS keep the screen covered with something. Right now I have the plastic covering the kindle came with on it (I cut away the part that covered the controls) and that's going to stay there until the screen cover I ordered arrives.

Just as an interesting fact, if you call to cancel your home delivery of the NY Times (I just did) you are forced to speak to a representative. The representative told me that they were "authorized" to offer a 16 week subscription at half price to keep me as a customer and when I said no they said that in that case they were authorized to offer me 26 weeks at half price! (That's still more than it costs to get it on the kindle.) So...if any of you out there want to lower your delivery prices WITHOUT getting a kindle, just call the NY Times and threaten to cancel. :)

I wish I had seen this post when I bought my Kindle, just last month. Less than 30 days after purchase, the Kindle slid from my hands to the car floor- and the screen stopped functioning! Amazon support indicated it could repair the device for $180 (purchase of the extended warranty?) but would not otherwise repair or replace the device. I was shocked and dismayed at this lack of support for their product, and with a product that is more fragile than an egg. The Kindle 2 was fun while it lasted- but $350 is way too much to spend on such a fragile toy.

So the screen isn't the same type as what's used on the sony ebook readers? I saw one of the sony models at Fry's and wasn't able to scratch the screen with a credit card (I tried). From what you describe it sounds like yours has a glossy finish, even though all the marketing material says it has a matte finish. Are you sure you removed the protective plastic cover? Looking forward to the larger size. As long as the NYT portion works as well with the new model as it does in your video I plan on buying the larger model. Also you need to fix your blog so it doesn't resize the browser window when I open your images in separate tabs.

I just got a kindle for Christmas.

Why would anyone pay $13.99 for the NY Times when it's free online?

I'd pay maybe $5 for the ease of reading. But $13.99 makes no sense.
